About the Crusader
An anti-tobacco crusader and oral-cancer advocate
Dr. Vivekanand S. Rege has crusaded against tobacco and championed early oral-cancer detection since 1982, working in close association with Tata Memorial Hospital, Parel — one of the world’s premier cancer institutes.
He founded the OCAPS (Oral Cancer Awareness Prevention Screening Program), a practical screening initiative that catches oral cancers at their pre-malignant stage through simple oral checks done at home, the office or community camps. He also created an easy-to-use Oral Health Guide and scale so anyone, anywhere, can screen themselves.
A Retired Dentist & Lifelong Advocate
Dr. Rege has now retired from dentistry and devotes himself to the anti-tobacco movement and oral-cancer awareness he has led since 1982. His lifetime of gentle, honest clinical care in Mumbai is his foundation; his cause now is early detection that saves lives.

Serving the Nation — 26/11 Mumbai Terror Attack Trial
2010 — Forensic odontology in the Ajmal Kasab trial
Dr. Rege helped the Government of India prosecute Ajmal Kasab, the Pakistani terrorist behind the 26/11/2008 Mumbai terror attacks, by providing scientific proof in forensic odontology to Public Prosecutor Ujjwal Nikam. His professional evidence helped establish that Kasab was not a juvenile — a factor in the capital punishment that was ultimately handed down. He provided this service entirely free of charge, as a true patriot of his Bharat Mata.
